( 翻譯 by Charlie F. Jones, June 2nd, 2014 )

DEAR FAMILY ET AL;

I'M USING CARBON FOR THIS LETTER; AN UNPARDONABLE SIN I KNOW, BUT I HAVE ONLY A FEW MINUTES IN WHICH TO GET IT OUT BY JUNK.

STILL ONLY 16 OF US AMERICANS ON THE ISLAND OF FORMOSA NOW, AND APPARENTLY THERE WON'T BE ANY OTHER ALLIED TROOPS UNTIL THE MIDDLE OF NEXT MONTH WHEN CHINESE INVADE... AND IT MAY WELL BE AN INVASION; THE FORMOSANS ARE VERY LOYAL TO THE JAPANESE AS A RESULT OF MANY YEARS OF INBREEDING. I DON'T BELIEVE THE IDEA IS SUCH A BAD ONE; THE ISLAND IS ALMOST ENTIRELY JAPANESE, AND THEN THERE ARE 250,000 JAP TROOPS. IF YOU COULD SEE THE DIFFERENCE IN STANDARDS OF LIVING BETWEEN THE JAPS AND CHINESE-BOTH ON THEIR HOME GROUND, I'M SURE YOU'D RATHER BE A JAP.

THE JAPS ARE STILL TREATING US LIKE KINGS, ALTHO' WE ARE INTERNED IN EVERY SENSE OF WORD. LIVING IN A BEAUTIFUL HOTEL WITH A MYRIAD OF SERVANTS AND JAP SOLDIERS TO GUARD US; BOTH OUR ACTIONS AND TO SEE THAT SOME DIE-HARD DOESN'T CAUSE A REGRETTABLE INCIDENT. WE EACH HAVE A BIG SPACIOUS ROOM, VERY WELL DECORATED AND LIGHT AND AIRY; THERE'S ONE OF THOSE QUAINT LITTLE JAPANESE GARDENS IN THE PATIO WITH BRIDGES AND A LITTLE STREAM- VERY PRETTY. THE FOOD IS EXCELLENT AS FAR AS JAP FOOD GOES, I GUESS, BUT IT ISN'T FOR ME. RICE THREE TIMES A DAY, FISH ALL THE TIME, HORRIBLE LOOKING WEEDS, AND THE MOST GHASTLY RISING-SUN COLORED EGGS. THEY HAVE MANY QUAINT WAYS OF PREPARING FISH; THEY NEVER CLEAN IT, AND THE EYES STARE SOULFULLY AT YOU, AND THEN IT'S OFTEN RAW. UGH. I'LL BET I'VE LOST TEN POUNDS.

WE CAN PROWL ABOUT TAIHOKU WHEN WE HAVE JAP M.P.S TO GUARD US. YESTERDAY A COUPLE OF US WENT OUT AND WERE FURNISHED A NICE BIG OLDSMOBILE IN WHICH TO TRAVEL. WE WENT TO A BIG DEPARTMENT STORE AND DID A LITTLE SHOPPING. IT WAS FAIRLY COMPLETE HAVING ESCAPED THE BOMBING, AND THE STOCK WAS MUCH AS ONE OF OUR STORES. I CAUGHT ON OF THE STORE GIRLS RUNNING DOWN THE AISLE WITH SOME PROPAGANDA BOOKLETS WHICH THEY WERE ABOUT TO BURN. GRABBED A FEW MUCH TO HER CONSTERNATION, AND THEY ARE VERY GOOD; EXCELLENT CARICATURES OF ROOSEVELT, STIMSON, CHURCHHILL, EDEN AND ALL OF THE ALLIED LEADERS.THE ONES OF ROOSEVELT WERE PRICELESS; I WISH I'D HAD THEM LAST ELECTION.

THEN WE WENT TO SOME SILK STORES AND LOOKED AT THE JAPANESE KIMONAS(KIMONOS). THEY ARE VERY BEAUTIFUL, BUT THE PRICE IS ALMOST PROHIBITIVE. 500 JAP YEN WHICH IS THE EQUIVALENT OF $125 FOR A GOOD ONE. THE THINGS ARE TOO COMPLICATED TO PUT ON ANYWAY; THERE ARE THREE LAYERS WITHA FANCY BAND AND A BIG BOW WHICH YAKES ABOUT FIFTEEN MINUTES TO PUT ON.(I IMAGINE)

THEN WE WENT TO A JAP RESTAURANT AND HAD FRIED CHIKEN BREAST WHICH WAS EXCELLENT AND THE FINEST MEAL IN WEEKS. WE WERE RATHER UNCOMFORTABLE AT THAT POINT FOR WE DISCOVERED THAT WE WERE BEING TRAILED BY OTHER JAPS THAN WERE ASSIGNED TO US. BEING THE ONLY AMERICANS CROWDS FOLLOW US EVERYWHERE AND IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO BE INCONSPICUOS.

THE JAPS ASSIGNED TO US ARE VERY COURTEOUS AND BOW FROM THE WAISTE AT THE SLIGHTEST PROVOCATION. BUT THOSE IN THE STREETS GIVE US BLACK LOOKS, AND I DON'T KNOW THAT I BLAME THEM AFTER WHAT WE'VE DONE TO THEIR CITY. IT'S THE FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE I'VE EVER BEEN AFRAID TO ANSWER A BLACK LOOK WITH ANOTHER.

LAST NIGHT WE WENT TO THE JAP THEATER; DANCING, SINGING, VAUDEVILLE, ETC. PARTS OF IT WERE GOOD BUT THE AUDIENCE AND ACTORS WERE TENSE BECAUSE OF OUR PRESENCE, AND PEOPLE LOOKS MORE AT US THAN AT THE SHOW. ORDINARILY I'D EAT UP ALL THE ATTENTION, BUT RIGHT NOW IT'S MOST DISCONCERTING.

GOTTA CUT THIS SHORT NOW, AS THE TRANSPORTATION( A JUNK TO THE COAST) IS HIGHLY UNPREDICTABLE, AND IF THE JAP FISHERMEN DON'T TURN THIS OVER TO THE AMERICANS IN HONG-KONG YOU'LL NEVER GET IT ANYWAY.

     MUCH LOVE, JACK
